This review appeared in the University of Dayton Flyer News on September 27, 2005: "UD Band Set to Share Stage with Midwest’s Best at Harvest Jam"

By: Dana Kulchawik, A & E Editor

There’s no better place to form a band than in college. Meet a few people who play, sit down to jam, and before you know it there’s a small yet unified fan base that all claim to be your number one fan. Not to mention that, in the college realm, if there’s live music … people will come. After all, lots of bands came together in college and made it to the big time: R.E.M. (University of Georgia at Athens), Phish (University of Vermont in Burlington), The Doors (UCLA’s film school) and Talking Heads (Rhode Island School of Design), just to name a few. Even the incomprehensibly successful Hootie and the Blowfish got their start at the University of South Carolina. Obviously jetting straight to the top is unlikely, but, you know success is on the way when gigs get bigger and crowds flourish. Dayton based jam band The Goods are doing just this. Consisting of UD members Mike Doyle (drums, vocals) and Brad Pace (guitar, vocals), alumni Nate Springhart (keys, vocals) and Dayton local Mike Schneider (bass), they’re set to hit the big stage this weekend at Harvest Jam, a rapidly growing festival with some of the Midwest’s best improvisational bands. The Goods have been playing their funky jam rhythms all over the Dayton scene for over a year. They’ve found strong cohesion in their music and now have a solid collection of originals and covers to finely fulfill any show. With much experience in the playing field and a good network of fellow musicians, they got invited to play at this years fourth annual Harvest Jam by hosts, founders and performers, The Maji. “Considering the number of well-known bands that we will share the stage with, and the number of people that will be attending, this is our biggest show to date,” said Pace. The Goods will be among some fine company at Harvest Jam, which will be held this year at Frontier Ranch Music Center, just ten miles away from Columbus. With one of the largest Harvest Jam line-ups to date, there will be no lack of music to keep crowds dancing all weekend. Performances will include many up and comers such as Columbus band Jovial Flow, Detroit-based Smokestack (voted as “On the Verge” by Relix Magazine) and Dayton-based band CheezCake, along with many more. This line-up of heady musicians places The Goods at the top of their game in Dayton. They are ready and excited for the opportunity to perform at Harvest Jam, but also to kick back on a fun-filled weekend of music. “Getting on stage is what I’m mostly looking forward to,” commented Doyle. “Other than that, I’m just looking forward to camping, being with friends and seeing lots of good music.” Sadly, it’s possible the growing Goods won’t be able to fit their crowd into any old Ghetto house for long. So if you’re itching to get out of Dayton before the fall break, this is a great opportunity to go camping and enjoy a fine line-up of jammin’ musicians at this years Harvest Jam. Harvest Jam is this Thursday through Saturday. The Goods will be performing Thursday night for the early bird crowd. For driving directions and ticketing information, visit www.theharvestjam.com.
